Building homes on the Moon.
What sounds like science fiction is now moving forward as a real project.
At the center of it is ICON Technology, a startup based in Austin, Texas.
1. What Is ICON? A Company at the Forefront of Construction × Technology
ICON is an Austin-based startup founded in 2017 that uses robotics and AI to develop technology for building homes with 3D printers.
A giant printer lays down concrete material layer by layer, completing a house in a short period of time.
Its key features can be summed up in three points: "dramatically shorter construction times," "less waste," and "curved, highly designed structures."
The technology is drawing attention as a solution to global challenges such as housing shortages and soaring construction costs.

In fact, in the Austin area, ICON's giant 3D printers are being used to build a 3D-printed housing community of around 100 homes and a timeshare-style resort house community.

2. Launch of ICON Prime, a New Division Focused on Space and Defense
What prompted me to write this article was a headline I saw on the local news last week: "ICON launches ICON Prime, a new division focused on space and defense."
It's a sign that ICON is getting serious about space.
The division's president is Will Hurd, a former CIA officer and former U.S. Congressman.
ICON Prime is a specialized organization that leverages the company's strength in 3D printing technology to provide infrastructure and buildings for the U.S. military and NASA. It covers both national security and space development, from modernizing military facilities to future construction on the lunar surface.
Back in 2022, ICON already secured a contract worth about $57 million through a partnership with NASA to support lunar exploration and commercial lunar construction projects.
The goal is to use lunar soil, known as "regolith," to build infrastructure on-site. Rather than transporting materials from Earth, the idea is to build with materials found on the Moon.
At NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, an experimental habitat simulating life on Mars, "Mars Dune Alpha," has already been completed, and ICON Prime is expected to be involved in plans for sustainable lunar bases like this as well.
I can't take my eyes off what Austin-born ICON Technology does next.
