A New Spot for Walking Downtown Austin | Waterloo Greenway

HOWDY!
I'm Meg, a local guide living in Austin, Texas — now in my 10th year here.
When you visit downtown Austin for the first time, you might find yourself wondering: what kind of city is this?
A great new spot to help answer that question — explored on foot — is Waterloo Greenway.

A Trail Between the City and Nature

Waterloo Greenway is an urban trail being developed along Waller Creek, which runs through the east side of downtown.
Part of this large-scale project, costing $91 million (about ¥14.7 billion), was completed this month.
Although it sits in the heart of the city among high-rise buildings, it lets you enjoy riverside greenery, colorful native Texas plants, shaded trails, and the open feeling of emerging onto Lady Bird Lake, which flows east to west across downtown — all at once. It's a spot where you can walk "between the city and nature."

The route I recommend is to enter from the Cesar Chavez St. entrance and walk south toward Lady Bird Lake.
There are several entrances, but if you start around here, you can feel the scenery gradually shift toward the waterfront as you leave the downtown skyline behind you. Along the way, there are well-maintained walkways, bridges, and planted areas, making it easy and welcoming even for tourists.

Experience Austin's Approach to City-Building

What's interesting is that this isn't just a walking path — it's a place where you can feel Austin's distinctive approach to city-building.
In the middle of a rapidly growing city, it creates a space where people can get around on foot or by bike instead of by car, restores the natural environment, and turns it into a place where people gather.
The trail is designed to weave between high-rise condos and sits next to spaces where people come and go, like cafés and shops, which makes it feel safe.
As tech companies and high-rise condos continue to multiply in Austin, Waterloo Greenway is a symbol of the downtown of the future.

Morning or Evening Is the Best Time to Walk

For a light stroll, about 30 minutes is plenty to enjoy the changing scenery.
The best time to walk is in the morning or evening, avoiding the strong midday sun.
Especially in summer, the sun is intense during the day, so a hat and something to drink are a must.
In the evening, the light is softer, and when you come out toward Lady Bird Lake, you can enjoy a classic Austin view where the lake and skyline overlap.
If you're taking photos, look for spots where the skyline, bridges, and riverside greenery all fit in the frame.

Water Activities Like Kayaking and SUP Are Great Too

If you have extra time, I recommend spending some time around Lady Bird Lake.
At the Austin Rowing Club along Lady Bird Lake, you can rent kayaks, SUPs, canoes, and more — viewing the downtown scenery from the water is a refreshing experience.
I also recommend these local activities: The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail (about 16 km), which connects to the greenway and loops around Lady Bird Lake, and bat watching at the Congress Ave Bridge, where bats take off all at once just before sunset from spring through fall.

Austin enjoyed on foot, and Austin viewed from the water.
Combining the two makes for a very satisfying downtown outing.
